As much as Labour claim they’re ideologically aligned and as much as they claim that they have the constitution on their side, they will fail in the long term.

They won’t get to grips with the deficit.

The public will feel that democracy has failed them if we get another PM that no one voted for.

The coalition will not be strong enough to survive.

Sometimes things just have to get worse before they get better – just when you think you’ve hit rock bottom, you realise that you still have a lot further to fall.

Whatever GB has promised, Labour cannot / will not deliver Proportional Representation.

We will have another election within six months, the Tory’s will get their majority and will push through their reforms.

Let the losers join together and show the Country why they were rejected.

Let the rest of us see what kind of democracy PR can deliver! Not much.

The new word of the left is “progressive”. Considering, if nothing else, the last 13 years have shown that socialism increases the gap between the rich and poor, Labour is anything but progressive.

Support for a “progressive government” is strong among the general public. If you ask people whether they would like a progressive government, it is hardly surprising that they say yes.

But that does not mean that a LibDem / Labour coalition would be progressive.

Hayek highlighted this technique of the left many years ago. Take a word that you know people will agree with and claim it as an adjective of your party. The same was done with the word ‘liberal’, so successfully that in most circles it has completely changed the meaning of the word.

Liberalism stands for individual freedoms, low taxes and small government. It does not mean taxing the rich to help the poor, government dictating what schools parents must send their children to, or further powers being transferred to politicians.

If you want to live in a society where there is no respect for private property, where people are forced to stay poor or risk losing their benefits, where you can be labelled a criminal for your political or religious beliefs, then say so. But please don’t call it “progressive”.

The Lib Dems do have some progressive policies which should now be embraced by the Conservatives. Cut tax for the poor, get rid of ID cards and the surveillance state, and give every parent the ability to send their children to the school of their choice (whether private or public).

The Conservatives have never had a problem with cutting tax. The criticism is that they prefer to do it for the rich first. But I have never heard a Tory argue against a tax cut for anybody. Socially both parties are pretty liberal.

If the next Government is a coalition that believes in low tax (for everybody), private property and civil liberties then we really will have a “progressive government”.
